Shopping cart software is software used in oscommerce to assist people making purchases online, analogous to the American English term ‘shopping cart’. In British English it is generally known as a shopping basket, almost exclusively shortened on websites to ‘basket’.

The software allows online shopping customers to accumulate a list of items for purchase, described metaphorically as “placing items in the shopping cart”. Upon checkout, the software typically calculates a total for the order, including shipping and handling (i.e. postage and packing) charges and the associated taxes, as applicable.

These applications typically provide a means of capturing a client’s payment information, but in the case of a credit card they rely on the software module of the secure gateway provider, in conjunction with the secure payment gateway, in order to conduct secure credit card transactions online.

Some setup must be done in the HTML code of the oscommerce templates, and the shopping cart software must be installed on the server which hosts the site, or on the secure server which accepts sensitive ordering information. E-shopping carts are usually implemented using HTTP cookies or query strings. In most server based implementations however, data related to the shopping cart is kept in the Session object and is accessed and manipulated on the fly, as the user selects different items from the cart. Later at the process of commit, the information is accessed and an order is generated against the selected item thus clearing the shopping cart.

Although the most simple shopping carts strictly allow for an item to be added to a basket to start a checkout process (e.g. the free PayPal shopping cart), most shopping cart software actually provides additional features that an Internet merchant uses to fully manage an online store. Data (products, categories, discounts, orders, customers, etc.) is normally stored in a database and accessed in real time by the software.

Shopping Cart Software is also known as e-commerce software, e-store software, online store software or storefront software.

WelThere is no doubt about the fact that I absolutely love osCommerce Templates, and thoroughly enjoy tweaking all parts of it to get the underlying code to perform at its best. In the following chapters, you will learn about all parts of the osCommerce structure and how to adapt them to your needs. Let’s get cooking! As starters, let’s change a few design elements of the default osCommerce setup, namely, the stylesheet handling, and the three column layout, which is currently a bit inflexible. In this chapter, we will see how to:Add easy top-category driven stylesheetsCreate flexible column definitions1. Add Easy Top-Category Driven StylesheetsThis recipe allows you to personalize the look of your store with much more detail than one stylesheet alone could offer. You will be able to specify an extra stylesheet for use with any of your top categories. This will come in very handy for color
driven categorie. You can specify new stylesheets for all or only a few of your top categories; for all others the default stylesheet will be used. The new stylesheets are relevant for all product-related pages, which are:index.phpproduct_info.phpproduct_reviews.phpproduct_reviews_info.phpproduct_reviews_write.phptell_a_friend.phpPresentationIn our case, the three top categories of a default osCommerce installation are called Hardware, Software, and DVD Movies. We will have the following background colors assigned for easy referencing: Hardware is yellow, Software is red, and DVD Movies is blue.Clicking on Software or any related subcategory shows the red background. As the rounded corners of the infoboxes are images and not stylesheet driven, they will be replaced by transparent images.

My name is Kim Elliott, the formation of a member of the Zen Cart team. Our team is a total of three PHP programmer (2 from the original osC team) and two retail / design / advisory members.
Zen Cart templates project began in June 2003, using the basic code osC MS2. We spent six months to rewrite the code and eliminate errors, and then released the Alpha version of Zen Cart. In the past 18 months, we have the source code based on the constantly revised and improved to increase the variety of functions, sustained release the new version. Upcoming release of new version of v1.3 will be the biggest changes since the adoption of a completely different business and interface logic design, fully compatible with XHTML category, object-oriented coding. Next plans to re-structure “Checkout” and “Create an Account” steps, and then modify the management page, make the interface more friendly, more intuitive. The ultimate goal is to make one so that the vast majority of users do not modify the code or add features, you can install and run software.

Q: Do you think OSCommerce templates is not for you or your client’s most important reason for that?

Let me use another program is mainly due to: osC software is difficult to add new features. To install and run even a very simple store, all need to do a lot of changes

(I then opened a line of professional bird supply stores). Is very difficult to upgrade, unless you rebuild the entire store. If you want to change the store appearance, need to rewrite the code.
When we abandon osC, it was decided to make it easier for some shop owners, they are the software end-users.
